interrupt

interrupt
An interrupt, as far as modems and computers are concerned, is an electronic signal that tells the computer that something important is happening. Most modems can be set up by software to send an interrupt every time a character is received by the computer. When operating at fast speeds, this makes sure that the computer doesn't miss characters as it is printing them on the screen or saving them to a disk.
